Duke Cancer Patient Support Program volunteers play a critical role in the day-to-day activities at the Duke Cancer Center. Volunteers provide conversation and comfort, offer refreshments and help patients locate areas and resources in the clinics and hospital.

Would you like to make a lasting difference in the life of a pediatric patient at Duke Children’s Hospital? How about forever be able to be a positive influence on a child, their siblings, and their families? Then consider volunteering for the Duke SPLASH. Many studies have shown the positive effects that exercise, swimming in particular, has on recovering patients, especially kids. Swimming helps patients manage pain, increase energy and maintain general well-being. Our program provides based swimming lessons to patients and their siblings from Duke Children’s, but more importantly, we have the opportunity to boost their morale during a difficult time for them and their families. Volunteer responsibilities include:
- The ability to work one-on-one or in small groups with patients
Teach the students base swimming skills such as; kicking, floating, and base swimming skills
This program is looking for undergraduate or graduate students at Duke University with experience in the swimming lesson environment. Experience in competitive swimming is a plus.
