Duke's obstetrics and gynecology teams collaborate with our specialists in gender medicine to offer comprehensive care and resources, and support for all ages. We offer gender-affirming care for LGBTQ+ patients, including family planning, bleeding management, and contraception. We also provide pregnancy care, which includes high-risk obstetric care. Our team of experts is trained to provide high-quality, compassionate care to individuals who are considering transitioning, going through the process, or have already completed their transition and require ongoing care.

Improving Maternal Health

Maternal health is important for everyone. But, as noted by the CDC, Black people experience more life-threatening problems during pregnancy and are three times more likely to die during childbirth than white people. Many of those deaths are due to variations in quality health care and underlying chronic conditions, and are preventable. Duke Health is working to overcome these issues.

Starting July 1, 2026, Duke University Hospital’s Obstetric Emergency Department (OB ED) will offer specialized care for obstetric emergencies 24/7 for people who are 20 weeks pregnant or more and people who are postpartum for up to six weeks.

Reasons to visit the OB ED include:

• Abdominal pain
• Contractions or labor symptoms or pre-labor concerns
• Decrease in normal fetal movement
• High blood pressure symptoms, such as severe headache, vision changes, or swelling
• Leaking fluid or ruptured membranes
• Vaginal bleeding

To access the OB ED, use Duke University Hospital’s main entrance and take the elevator to the 5th floor. If you arrive at the hospital and don’t know where to go, our team will direct you.
