Duke Gastroenterology Clinic - Clinic 2J

Type:Duke University Hospital Outpatient Department
Hospital-based clinics are an extension of Duke Health hospitals and have additional facility charges. Some insurance companies process bills with a deductible and coinsurance rather than as a co-pay as for an office visit. This may impact the amount of the bill you are responsible for after payment from your insurance plan. Check with your insurance company before your visit to determine what your responsibility will be.
Duke gastroenterologists are part of a team of GI specialists who diagnose and treat gastrointestinal disorders that affect the esophagus, stomach, intestine, liver and pancreas. We assess your condition using the latest diagnostic equipment and recommend treatment to help you experience relief. We do our best to coordinate your care and your appointments so you can make the most of your time at our clinic.

GI specialists also provide the following care:

  • Nutrition evaluation/management. Our experts include a dietician who specializes in nutritional care for gastrointestinal issues.
  • Esophageal disorders. Duke esophageal specialists include gastroenterologists and thoracic surgeons who care for people with esophageal disorders including: Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), swallowing disorders such as esophageal dysphagia, and esophageal motility disorders such as achalasia.

Managing your care can be a complex process that requires multiple visits for evaluation, testing, and possibly surgery, when needed, as well as follow up care. Our esophageal specialists work together to ensure your care is streamlined to make the most of your visits when you come to Duke.

  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This team includes specialized IBD gastroenterologists, a colorectal surgeon and dietician. They work together to provide medical, nutritional and surgical management of IBD.

Our gastroenterologists, physician assistants and nurse practitioners will conduct a thorough evaluation and may recommend tests to determine the cause of and best treatment for your condition. Depending on your needs, you may undergo some tests directly in the clinic. These include esophageal manometry, acid reflux testing, and FibroScan for liver conditions.

If you require additional testing, including imaging or blood work, you will be directed to a nearby clinic on site.

Preparing For Your Visit

Download a PDF guide that includes information on what to expect during your visit.

Give yourself plenty of time to get to your appointment. Your doctor may ask you to arrive early so that you can have lab tests completed before your examination. Even if this is not the case, we suggest that you should allow about 45 minutes to get to your appointment in addition to your travel time to Durham. This will allow you sufficient time to park, locate the building, get to the particular clinic you're visiting, and register. Duke Clinic is approximately a quarter of a mile from the nearest parking deck. Please note that appointments may be subject to being rescheduled upon late arrivals.

Informal clothing and comfortable shoes are appropriate attire for your visit.
