We provide a comprehensive range of assessment, diagnostic, treatment, consultation, and educational services for children with speech, language, hearing, cognitive, and swallowing disorders.

Services
Our specialists have experience with complex medical conditions and family situations that affect a child’s hearing and language development. In addition to providing in-depth evaluations, our providers have expertise in and access to advanced testing to pinpoint what may be causing problems. We offer a range of consultation and treatment options, and we have the specialized training and experience necessary to provide care that is tailored to each child’s individual speech pathology and audiology needs.
Language and Family Support
Interpreters are available to translate information in families’ primary language. In addition, a dedicated patient navigator guides families through audiology testing and treatment and serves as single point-of-contact. We pride ourselves on maintaining ongoing, open communication with your referring provider, family, school staff, and community speech-language pathologists and audiologists to continually inform your child’s treatment plan and ensure your child continues to receive appropriate services.
Pediatric Speech Pathology
Services and Conditions We Treat
Communication disorders (including speech, language, and thinking skills)
- Articulation and phonology problems
- Augmentative and alternative communication assistance (assessment and device trial therapy sessions take place at Clinic 1I location)
- Cognitive communication disorders related to traumatic brain injury and other conditions
- Fluency and stuttering problems
- Language delays/disorders
- Motor speech disorders, including childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) and dysarthria
- Speech, resonance, and velopharyngeal functioning problems associated with craniofacial-related conditions like cleft palate
- Speech problems related to tracheostomy/speaking valve
Feeding and swallowing disorders
- Dysphagia evaluation and treatment
- Respiratory muscle training
Specialized speech diagnostic tools include nasopharyngoscopy, nasometry, respiratory pressure manometry, videofluoroscopy, and fiberoptic endoscopic swallow evaluations.
Pediatric Audiology
Conditions We Treat:
- Auditory processing disorder*, including children who are 7 years old and older
- Balance disorders*
- Hearing loss and hearing disorders
- Tinnitus*
*For these conditions, we provide preliminary testing that is usually needed before scheduling more advanced, specific testing.
Evaluations We Perform:
- Auditory brain stem response (ABR) testing with or without sedation, since sedation can accommodate infants and older children who are not behaviorally ready for traditional testing
- Hearing assessments, including visual reinforcement audiometry and conditioned play audiometry
- Immittance testing to assess function of eardrum and middle ear structures
- Otoacoustic emission testing to assess inner ear function
Intervention and Device Options We Offer and Support:
- Hearing aids (including bone conduction hearing aids) evaluation, fitting, and ongoing care
- Cochlear implants evaluation and ongoing maintenance
- FM systems and hearing-assistive technology

Parking
Duke Hospital Garage:
- Duke Hospital parking garage is located across Erwin Road from Duke University Hospital. Vehicles enter one block north, at 2223 Elba Street. The garage is walking distance from the hospital entrance.
- Visitors may take a secure, well-lighted and climate-controlled walkway under Erwin Road. To reach the walkway, take a parking garage elevator down to Level RT (for "tunnel") and follow the signs to Duke University Hospital or Duke Children’s Hospital & Health Center. This parking garage is most convenient for patients and visitors who intend to use the Erwin Road hospital entrance, or visit Duke University Hospital or Duke Children's Hospital & Health Center.
- Cost: $2 per hour or a maximum $8 day.
Duke Medicine Circle Parking Garage:
- Located at 302 Trent Drive and features a climate-controlled, enclosed walkway to Duke Clinic. A free shuttle is located just outside the garage to escort you to the Duke Medicine Pavilion entrance. This parking garage is most convenient for patients and visitors going to the Duke Medicine Pavilion, Duke Cancer Center, and Duke Clinic.
- Cost: $2 per hour or a maximum $8 per day.
Additional Parking Information:
- Parking for oversized vehicles is located adjacent to the Duke University Hospital parking deck. To obtain a pass for an oversized vehicle, call 919-684-7275.
- Valet parking is also available at the entrance to Duke Clinic, Monday - Friday from 7:00 am - 6:00 pm for $12 per visit.
- One-use parking passes ($5 each) and five-use parking passes ($25 each) are available for patients visiting Duke for an appointment, patients in the hospital, and visitors of patients admitted to Duke University Hospital.
- To purchase discounted parking passes, visit an information desk at Duke Central Tower, Duke Medicine Pavilion, the Duke University Hospital entrance, Duke Cancer Center, or Duke Clinic (1st floor main lobby) to obtain a Discounted Parking Authorization Form. You can then go to the parking garage or parking office to purchase the passes. Parking passes expire after one year.

Public Transportation
Plan your trip to Duke Children's Health Center Speech Pathology and Audiology Clinic through GoDurham bus routes 6, 11, 11B, and 20 or GoTriangle bus routes 400 and 405. The closest bus stops are Duke Hospital, Erwin Rd at Research Dr, and Erwin Rd at Emergency Dr. If you have trouble accessing these bus routes, visit GoDurham Access and GoTriangle Access to check if you meet the ADA eligibility for accessible transit programs.
