Comprehensive Wound Management
Our specialists provide comprehensive wound management for pressure injuries, open skin wounds caused by injury or surgery, venous ulcers (caused by poor blood circulation in the leg veins), non-healing surgical wounds, neuropathic foot wounds, and concerns related to broken or weeping skin.
Initial Consultation
During your initial consultation, you may see one or more specialists on our wound clinic team. They work to determine the cause of your wound and may perform testing or a biopsy to confirm a diagnosis.
If the cause is an underlying condition, such as poor circulation, diabetes, neuropathy, cancer, or a weakened immune system, they may gather information from other specialists at Duke to determine the best approach to treatment. Once they have a thorough understanding of your condition, they recommend a treatment plan with the goal of healing your chronic wound.
Your treatment plan may include:
- Wound cleaning
- Dead or inflamed tissue removal
- Wound dressings
- Negative pressure wound therapy
- Compression stockings and bandages
- Skin grafts
- Medications
- Nail trimming
- Callus paring
In specific cases, hyperbaric oxygen therapy may be recommended to people with chronic wounds. This increases the oxygen concentration in the blood which promotes wound healing.
Wound Care Education
Your provider will also educate you about the cause of your wound, how to care for the wound at home, and how to prevent it from recurring. Normal wound healing takes about three weeks. However, healing may take longer if there is an underlying cause. When that is the case, your care may also require the services of specialists throughout Duke.
