FIFA Medical Center of Excellence

Duke Health is one of only three U.S. FIFA Medical Centers of Excellence and one of 49 in the world. FIFA, the international governing body of soccer, awards this designation to established centers that have demonstrated leadership in soccer medicine with facilities and programs designed specifically for the sport. Duke collaborates with U.S. Soccer and other FIFA Centers of Excellence to provide athletes from around the country with the highest-quality, sport-specific care.

School, Club, and Community Programs

Our team works with athletes, athletic trainers, and coaches from local middle schools, high schools, colleges, and sports clubs to help athletes achieve their personal best while avoiding injury. These include Tobacco Road FC, Oak City United, Triangle United Soccer Association, and Wake FC. Our athletic medicine staff also work with Duke athletes throughout the school year and are on the field at many Duke athletic games. We also provide medical coverage at soccer practices, games, and tournaments around the Triangle.

Why Choose Duke

A Team Approach

If you experience a soccer-related injury or just want to minimize your risk, you will receive comprehensive care from a team of specialists. Orthopaedic surgeons, sports medicine doctors, physician assistants, physical therapists, athletic trainers, psychologists, nutritionists, and others can help restore function, speed time to recovery, and provide training on injury prevention.

Soccer-Specific Care

Soccer involves quick starting and stopping, twisting and pivoting, and physical contact, all of which can lead to injury. We use X-rays, fluoroscopy, stress radiography, ultrasound, MRI, and CT scans to diagnose your condition and recommend the most effective non-surgical treatment or appropriate surgery. Many of our staff have played or coached soccer. We understand the implications of injury -- and the joy of getting back in the game.

Research

We participate in multi-center trials with soccer organizations and other institutes around the world to advance medical care and performance training for the soccer athlete. Our doctors study biomechanics in conjunction with human performance testing through the Michael W. Krzyzewski Human Performance Laboratory (the K-lab) and use the latest technology in health and GPS monitoring on athletes to improve injury prevention and rehabilitation. Our faculty pioneered several surgical breakthroughs, including novel fracture repairs and advanced surgical techniques.
