Caregiver: A Love Story
3:00 - 4:00 pm
Film screening and discussion with filmmaker Dr. Jessica Zitter
- In this session, Dr. Jessica Zitter will present her short documentary, Caregiver: A Love Story followed by an intimate moderated discussion on the topic of family caregiver burden. Caregiver: A Love Story is the tale of one man struggling to care for his dying wife. When 59-year-old Bambi decides to forgo further treatment for her cancer and die at home, her husband Rick leaves his job to become her primary caregiver—a role for which he has no experience and little support. This film highlights an essential, yet largely unseen workforce—the family caregivers of America, and challenges viewers to acknowledge the growing strain placed on them. Following the screening, Dr. Zitter will give behind-the-scenes details on the making of the film, her journey learning about family caregiver burden, stories from her practice, and ways she has learned to address this important issue. This program will highlight the role of the caregiver, including physicians, nurses, and other healthcare workers, and open a dialogue about how our healthcare system can work to better support the caregivers in our midst.
