Duke Cancer Center Cary Radiation Oncology

Type:Duke Raleigh Hospital Outpatient Department
Hospital-based clinics are an extension of Duke Health hospitals and have additional facility charges. Some insurance companies process bills with a deductible and coinsurance rather than as a co-pay as for an office visit. This may impact the amount of the bill you are responsible for after payment from your insurance plan. Check with your insurance company before your visit to determine what your responsibility will be.
You may be referred to this clinic if your cancer team determines that radiation therapy should be part of your treatment. We use several types of radiation therapy to treat a variety of cancers, including breast cancer, skin cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancers, and gastrointestinal (GI) cancers. Your comfort during this stage of your cancer treatment is our main concern.

Radiation Therapy in Cary

Your First Visit

Your first visit to this clinic will include a consultation with a radiation oncologist. They will review your medical records, perform a physical exam, discuss your personalized treatment options, and explain the potential risks and benefits of radiation therapy. You may need to undergo additional testing, which we will coordinate with members of your cancer team.

Simulation Procedure

You will come back to the clinic to undergo a CT simulation procedure. This helps us properly plan your radiation therapy. During this procedure, you may be fitted with a customized immobilization device that is used for planning and during the delivery of your treatment.

You will have a CT scan in the immobilization device, sometimes with oral and/or IV contrast material. You may also be asked to hold your breath for short periods of time. This simulation process usually takes about an hour or more, depending on your treatment needs.

Treatment Appointments

Subsequent appointments will be for your actual treatment on the linear accelerator. This machine delivers the high energy radiation beams used to damage and ultimately destroy the cancer cells. The type of radiation therapy you receive will be determined by your cancer team. It will dictate the frequency and length of your treatment.

Your Radiation Therapy Team

Your radiation oncologist, radiation therapists, and skilled nurses will keep you informed, comfortable, and safe throughout the process.

Our staff also includes financial care counselors who can walk you through payment authorizations and plans. Our nurse navigators can help you coordinate your appointments during your ongoing cancer care.

Social workers, dietitians, and other support staff are available to help you through this process as well.
