Profile
ABOUT ME

I am a medical oncologist who treats gastrointestinal cancers and conducts research on tumor immunology and immunotherapy. My interest in oncology stems from my experience in a cancer vaccine laboratory and working with oncologists during my undergraduate degree. I conduct primarily laboratory-based and translational research, with the goal of finding new immunotherapeutic options for patients with supportive biomarkers to identify patients. In the clinic, I aim to treat my patients with innovative therapies, learn more about their cancer through research, and offer understanding through shared decision-making processes.

MY RESEARCH INTERESTS

My laboratory and clinical-translational research focuses on how cancers, particularly melanoma and gastrointestinal malignancies, hide from the immune system when they spread (metastasize). This work primarily focuses on dendritic cells, a type of immune cell which helps to determine self versus non-self and is imperative for the anti-cancer immune response. While immunotherapy has offered promise for some patients, most do not benefit from these treatments, and a better understanding of the mechanisms tumors use to evade and suppress the immune system may lead to additional therapeutic options. Additionally, finding markers that identify which patients will benefit from different immunotherapies will be important for precise patient selection. My research is supported by a Damon Runyon Foundation Physician-Scientist award.
