Profile
ABOUT ME

As a surgeon that specializes in the vascular system, which is the body's network of blood vessels, I appreciate that there are many different ways to significantly help people. I truly believe making a connection with a person is one of the most important aspects in patient care. I don’t tell my patients what decision to make about their health. It's my job to understand the priorities in their life and then give them information and guidance to make their own decision. In doing so, a stroke can be prevented by repairing arteries to the brain. Fixing an aneurysm, which is caused by a weakness in the wall of an artery, can save someone from hemorrhaging to death, and treating the arteries to the legs can prevent an amputation or help reduce some causes of severe leg pain.

MY RESEARCH INTERESTS

I lead the Duke Vascular Malformation Team that treats patients from all over the world with very complicated vascular anomalies. We research new types of imaging and treatments of these congenital abnormalities of the blood vessels. I also have an interest in health services, and I participate in outcomes research within our division. This research studies the effects of health care systems on the overall health and well-being of patients, and then identifies which processes work best and which can be improved.
