About Me

I work with people across all populations, from chronic disease to elite athletes. My first focus is always on trying to understand each person’s health condition and goals. I always try and explain information in a way that can be easily understood and provide personal meaning. The testing we perform at the Duke Sports Medicine Forward program allows us to create a personal plan based on the client’s own physiology. I am an advocate for prevention and believe exercise and diet can impact almost all risk factors, such as blood pressure, cholesterol, fitness, weight, glucose levels, immune function, energy metabolism, systemic inflammation, and prevent chronic diseases, such as heart disease, stroke, hypertension, diabetes, and cancer. Healthy exercise and eating habits benefit every organ in your body and help you feel better, look better, and enjoy a higher quality of life.

Clinical Focus and Research

My Research Interests

I study cardiovascular disease. My research includes clinical uses of cardiopulmonary exercise testing, cardiac rehabilitation, and mechanisms of exercise intolerance in chronic disease. I also study clinical outcomes of patients with peripheral artery disease, heart failure, coronary artery disease, and diabetes. My primary interest is in prevention, specifically exercise training in at-risk or diseased populations, in order to improve risk factors and clinical outcomes. My basic science interests include using exercise to stimulate small blood vessel growth (angiogenesis) and skeletal muscle metabolism.
