Duke chiropractors use the latest methods to relieve muscle and joint pain, which can affect all parts of your life. Chiropractic treatment is a safe, non-invasive way to treat musculoskeletal pain, tension, stiffness, or soreness. We aim to improve your condition, keep pain from returning, and help you get back to doing the things you enjoy.

About Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care can be effective at treating and preventing back pain, neck pain, and certain types of headaches, as well as pain in the buttocks or shoulder blades. It may also help with certain types of nerve pain, tingling, or numbness that travels into an arm or leg. A major goal of chiropractic treatment is to treat your pain so you can return to activities in ways that will help prevent future pain.

The number of chiropractic sessions it takes before you start experiencing relief can vary based on your condition. For example, if you injured your back two days ago, and you seek immediate chiropractic care, you may start feeling better within a week or two of beginning treatment. If you’ve been experiencing chronic back pain for 30 years, it may take longer, like weeks or months, to experience relief.

Chiropractic Diagnosis

The goals of the diagnostic process are to help the chiropractic doctor identify the source of your pain, determine which treatments will most benefit you, and rule out treatments that may not be right for you.

History

Your doctor will take a careful history of your symptoms and ask about your work and other daily activities.

Physical Exam

Your doctor will complete neurologic and orthopaedic exams to determine the cause of your symptoms, as well as which positions and motions cause and relieve them. Your doctor may also analyze your posture and simple spinal movements, as well as actions such as walking.

Imaging

Imaging tests, such as an X-ray, MRI, or CT scan may be necessary. Depending on the type of test, you may be able to have it completed on-site. If you already have imaging records, they will review those with you.

Chiropractic Treatment

Chiropractic doctors at Duke Health understand that relieving and preventing muscle and joint pain is not a one-size-fits-all process. Depending on your condition and preferences, your doctor may use one or more of the following treatments:

Spinal Mobilization

With you lying on your back, front, or side, your doctor will apply pressure to your muscles and joints to stretch, adjust, or manipulate them to help them move better. This may be accompanied by a quick, shallow thrust. Following the procedure, your doctor will recheck the muscles and joints to see if movement has been restored and if pain has been relieved.

Myofascial Release Therapy

Fasciae are layers of tissue between our skin and muscles that facilitate movement. Sometimes with repetitive overuse or injury, the fasciae can stick to the muscles, resulting in pain and limited movement. Myofascial release therapy uses gentle pressure, either from your doctor’s hands or from an instrument, and guided motion to mobilize the fasciae and muscles to relieve symptoms.

Therapeutic Ultrasound

Therapeutic ultrasound is a painless process in which the doctor places a small device on your skin that sends high-frequency sound waves into your body. The sound waves penetrate into the soft tissues, creating vibrations that improve circulation, calm inflammation, bring more oxygen to the area, and relax tight muscles.

Electrical Muscle Stimulation

Your doctor applies electrodes to the area of pain, then an electrical current is transmitted to that area to soothe muscle spasms and relieve pain.

Mechanical Traction

Mechanical traction is a technique in which the doctor uses a machine to apply a gentle pulling or stretching force to the spine, with or without hand pressure, to relieve pain.

Mechanical Treatment

Your doctor may teach you how to avoid postures and patterns of movement that worsen your pain, and show you what to do instead.

Exercise and Yoga

If your condition is likely to respond favorably to yoga, core-strengthening, or other exercises, your doctor may teach you routines or poses that will help relieve your pain and improve your function.
