About Me
I am a general internal medicine doctor and clinical researcher and have focused my career on the management of obesity. I became interested in weight management during my training because I recognized that I could treat my patients’ health problems more effectively if I could help them manage their weight. I grew up in Durham and came back after residency to join Duke Health. In 2015, I became Director of the Duke Diet and Fitness Center and certified in obesity medicine. Duke Diet and Fitness is a multidisciplinary center with experts in medicine, nutrition, fitness and behavior.

Clinical Focus and Research
I have led numerous clinical trials investigating the safety, effectiveness, tolerability and feasibility of diets and medications for weight management. Through this research, I have developed particular expertise with the low-carbohydrate ketogenic diet, the low-glycemic load diet and the low-fat/reduced-calorie diet. I have also led studies examining the relationship of obesity with health, health care use and quality of life. My recent projects focus on improving the long-term adherence to lifestyle modifications related to weight management and use novel behavioral counseling, technology, behavioral economics and health care system redesign. I have received several awards for my research including two VA Research Career Development awards, The Obesity Society’s Ethan Sims Young Investigator Award, the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) and the Nutrition & Metabolism Society Award for Excellence in Nutrition & Metabolism. I also received the Duke University School of Medicine Excellence in Professionalism Award.
