About Me

As a kidney specialist, I see individuals with various degrees of kidney disease, from early-stage chronic kidney disease to patients on dialysis. The kidney is a stoic organ; it suffers in silence. Because the majority of kidney diseases are not painful, many people with kidney disease are not aware of their condition. Early detection of kidney disease could facilitate preventative care. Therefore, I am passionate about raising awareness about kidney disease as well as introducing remedies that could slow the progression of kidney disease to dialysis. When I am not seeing patients or doing research, I enjoy spending time with my family and biking.

Clinical Focus and Research

My Research Interests

My research focuses on APOL1 associated kidney disease. Two variants of the APOL1 gene explain much of the high burden of kidney disease in African Americans and individuals of recent African ancestry. The goal of my research is to discover disease mechanisms in order to develop preventative and therapeutic interventions for APOL1 associated kidney disease. The outcome of this research has the potential to save lives, save taxpayer money, and reduce kidney health disparities.
