Mark Chen, MD, PhD

I am a radiation oncologist who treats patients with all types of cancer, as well as some noncancerous conditions. I primarily care for veterans at the Durham VA Medical Center, where many of my patients have prostate, lung, head and neck, or gastrointestinal cancers. I also care for patients with metastatic cancer that has spread to the brain, spine, bones or other parts of the body. I understand that a cancer diagnosis is life-changing not only for patients but also for their families and loved ones. My goal is to understand your priorities, answer your questions and provide safe, effective treatment. When you leave your appointment, I want you to understand your diagnosis, the treatment I recommend, why I believe it may benefit you and the short- and long-term side effects you can expect. Radiation therapy is a powerful and effective treatment, but it can also feel unfamiliar and overwhelming. I strive to make radiation therapy easier to understand so that medical jargon and uncertainty are never barriers to receiving the best possible care.
