My research interests include the optimization of health as well as neurologic and functional recovery after spinal cord injury. I am also interested in care transitions, multi-disciplinary team functioning, safety and quality improvement.

About Me
I chose the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) because it aligns with my core belief that treating an individual holistically is much more than diagnosing and treating an injury or illness. While those are vitally important, PM&R places equal importance on restoring identity, reclaiming function, optimizing independence, and facilitating reconnection with family and community. I am also driven by the collaborative nature of PM&R, which sits at the intersection of multiple specialties, disciplines, and care settings. I truly believe the best outcomes emerge from teams working seamlessly together for the benefit of the patients we have the privilege to serve. As a subspecialist in spinal cord injury medicine, I am pleased to offer this care at the physician level within Duke Health for the first time. My additional practice areas include neurorehabilitation and spasticity, as well as rehabilitation following trauma, burns, and amputations. On a personal note, my wife and I are both from North Carolina and met as undergraduates at UNC in 1991. I treasure spending time with my family, which includes our three adult daughters, and I also enjoy running, fitness, hiking, and traveling.

Before scheduling your appointment, we strongly recommend you contact your insurance company to verify that the Duke Health location or provider you plan to visit is included in your network. Your insurance company will also be able to inform you of any co-payments, co–insurances, or deductibles that will be your responsibility. If you proceed in scheduling an appointment and your health insurance benefits do not participate with Duke, your out of pocket liability may be higher. We will contact you regarding your coverage and patient liability. If you are uninsured, learn more about our financial assistance policy.
