Charles Anene, MD

My interest in medicine began during the Nigerian Civil War that occurred from 1967 to 1970. During this time, I lost my sister, due to an anaphylactic reaction to a penicillin injection and also witnessed other disturbing illnesses and injuries, such as protein malnutrition, or “Kwashiokor”, as they call it in Nigeria. I also witnessed the first congenital heart repair to occur in West Africa, which has greatly impacted me. I came to the United States after high school to pursue medicine and am very excited to be a part of the team at Duke Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery of Lumberton. I am very passionate about the practice of medicine and find it very important to view it with the patient first. I always see each and every patient as a whole and view situations from their point of view. I believe that being a good listener, paying attention to details and being able to communicate with patients and their families make all the difference in how I practice medicine.
