About Me

I treat patients with non-malignant (non-cancerous) blood disorders like sickle cell disease, thalassemia, iron deficiency anemia, and immune thrombocytopenia. Several of my patients have blood disorders that have been present since birth. Others have blood disorders that they acquire later on in life due to nutritional deficiencies or autoimmune causes. I have a special focus on treating adults with sickle cell disease. I became interested in sickle cell disease because several of my family members have died from the condition, while others are thriving while living with it. I chose to become a hematologist because I want to improve care for adults with sickle cell disease and enjoy helping improve the lives of all patients with non-malignant blood disorders. I enjoy cooking plant-based, vegan foods because I believe good food is a vital part of maintaining good health and building healthy blood cells.

Clinical Focus and Research

My Research Interests

My research focus is on improving function in older adults with sickle cell disease. My goal is to develop interventions that will maintain and improve the quality of life, mobility, and survival of people with sickle cell disease as they age. I have received awards through the American Society of Hematology and aging awards for my study developing a Sickle Cell Disease Functional Assessment. Patients will benefit from this work by engaging in a process where they can be comprehensively evaluated to identify their sickle cell and age-related issues. This can then be used to develop personalized treatments, such as exercise training and nutritional interventions, to address the problems identified.
