WHERE I PROVIDE CARE
Profile
ABOUT ME

Throughout my career I have focused on providing exceptional care for all my patients. Taking care of patients is definitely the most rewarding component of medical practice. In particular being able to diagnose and surgically improve the condition of athletes and patients, so they can return to their previous level of activity is the greatest reward a physician can receive. My areas of interest and clinical expertise have been centered on all aspects of knee surgery, foot and ankle surgery and orthopedic sports medicine. We have worked on improving surgical techniques, recovery from surgery and injury, and as a result better outcomes from the various interventions. On a personal note, I am one of the Duke team physicians and enjoy working with the athletes, coaches and the rest of the sports medical team. One can learn a lot about life, communication and collaboration in this type of environment. My wife and I have been married for 34 years, and have four wonderful children which we tend to spend most of our free time with.

Clinical Focus and Research
MY RESEARCH INTERESTS

My areas of research have focused on 2 main areas: improving the understanding, prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of sports and activity-related problems of the lower extremity; and secondly trying to evaluate joint injury and osteoarthritis early in the process to possibly intervene before advanced changes occur in the joint. These areas of research are designed to allow patients to participate in activity and sports, while trying to prevent late arthritis. As a result of all the research, we have received numerous per reviewed grants and published over 200 peer reviewed articles. Our team has been recognized with numerous research related awards including Excellence in Research and the Cabaud award from the AOSSM, the Achilles award from ISAKOS, the Samson Award from the COA, the Roger Mann Award and the Leonard Goldner Award from the AOFAS, and the Kappa Delta Award from the AAOS in 2012. I have been been an invited lecturer nationally and internationally as well as authored an extensive number of book chapters and editor of three textbooks in sports medicine and arthroscopy.
