If hip, knee, shoulder, or thumb pain is slowing you down, Duke Health's Joint Health Program may be just what you need. This collaborative program combines physical therapy and occupational therapy, lifestyle coaching, nutrition, and more. The goal is to boost your overall health to help you move with less pain and more confidence. In many cases, the program can help you avoid or delay joint replacement surgery. If surgery is recommended, our experts help you prepare so you recover faster.

Having a Coach Helps You Meet Your Goals

“It can be hard to know where to start when managing your joint pain,” said Duke physical therapist and the program’s director, Preston Roundy, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT. “In the Joint Health Program, you’re paired with a physical or occupational therapist who acts as your coach and partner. We help you set clear goals, build sustainable habits, and connect with other experts when needed.” That might include sessions with a dietician, pain psychologist, or sleep specialist. Your Duke team works with you to understand your challenges and design a plan that fits your lifestyle.

Taking a Personalized Approach to Joint Pain

Every participant’s plan looks different. Some benefit from a single visit, while others meet regularly over several weeks. After your in-person visits have concluded, your PT or OT will check in with you regularly over the next year to make sure you’re making progress towards your goals.

Preparing for Surgery When Needed

If your surgeon determines that surgery is your best option for alleviating pain and improving your mobility, the Joint Health Program can help you prepare physically and mentally so you experience the best possible outcome. “Going into surgery strong and informed helps you recover faster, experience less pain, and get back to doing what you love sooner,” said Roundy.
