Visitor Guidelines for Duke Health Hospitals and Clinics

Effective April 1, 2026

Duke Health prioritizes your safety and well-being while recognizing the positive effect visitation has on our patients. As part of our patient-centered care based on recommendations from the CDC and our Infectious Disease and Infection Prevention experts, Duke University Health System will use the following visitation guidelines as of April 1, 2026.

Aggressive behavior is not tolerated at any Duke Health facility and may result in removal and possible prosecution.

Duke Health visiting hours are from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm daily.

  • Please note that visiting hours at Duke University Hospital differ and are from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm.

A maximum of four visitors are allowed per patient, where space permits.*

Visitors of all ages are allowed in inpatient, maternity, and ambulatory spaces.

Minors must be attended by an adult age 18+ at all times.

Visitors will be asked to present photo identification when entering the building.

Visitors must check in at a hospital information desk to receive a visitor badge, which is required to enter inpatient spaces.

Visitors must check out on departure using a kiosk or with information desk staff.

Visitors with fever, cough, other respiratory symptoms, or gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting or diarrhea should not visit.

As part of our commitment to ensuring Duke Health continues to be a safe place to work and receive care, weapons detection systems are currently utilized at Duke University Hospital, Duke Regional Hospital, and Duke Raleigh Hospital, a campus of Duke University Hospital. All patients, visitors, and non-credentialed vendors will be screened upon entry into our campus buildings.

* Additional visitation and masking precautions may apply to certain patient populations, including but not limited to patients with highly communicable diseases, as dictated by Infection Prevention, oncology, end-of-life, and overnight visitors. Please note that overnight visitation is not permitted in double-occupancy rooms, and the number of visitors allowed in these spaces is more limited compared to single-occupancy rooms. Please follow all unit guidelines and posted signage. Additionally, exceptions to visitation restrictions may be granted based on special circumstances, including, without limitation, to permit Compassionate Care Visitors.
