About Me
I entered medicine to improve the welfare of patients by better elucidating the scientific basis of disease. Caring for patients at the bedside and witnessing first-hand their unmet medical needs directly influences the type of work I do in the laboratory. My understanding of the mechanisms of disease pathogenesis influences my care of patients. I strive to help my patients and families understand why, and not just what, medical decisions are being made and help them to be engaged with their care.

Clinical Focus and Research
My research focuses on how the microbiota—the trillions of bacteria, viruses, and fungi that colonize individuals—shape the immune response. Specifically, I am interested in identifying bacteria and bacterial products that protect against inflammatory and infectious diseases, with the ultimate aim of translating these findings into clinically relevant therapeutics. To this end, I have identified and characterized a new bacterial species that protects against inflammatory bowel disease, which we are now trying to move forward in clinical trials.
