WHERE I PROVIDE CARE
Profile
ABOUT ME

I try to develop a relationship with my patients and their families to find out where they are in relationship to their disease process, and to work with them toward treatment. That type of partnership yields the best result. I’ve worked at many different health facilities, and Duke is a unique place for cardiac care. Duke is where people often come when they are at the end of the road for a certain diagnosis or care. They come for a consultation – a second or third opinion – on how to manage their cardiac disease. I have parents who live out of state. When they had to pursue healthcare for a cardiac-related event last year, it was really important to me that I could contact and speak with the providers – nurses at the bedside or the nurse practitioners in post-op in the clinic, or the physicians and surgeon themselves. I give kudos to Duke, because I think we really try to communicate at all levels and that’s really important to any patient who seeks care here.

MY RESEARCH INTERESTS

I have enjoyed working with the cardiovascular patient population for over twenty years. I have had the opportunity to create a heart failure disease management program that incorporated some of the first "talking scales" in the 1990s. Our research indicated the positive effects of these disease management programs for the well being of the heart failure population. I have ongoing interest in the care of these patients as well as the care of those with heart artery blockages, high blood pressure and heart valve disease.
