Use of communication device for people with ALS and their social support partners - Clinical Trial

What is the Purpose of this Study?

We are doing this study to test the feasibility and acceptability of an experimental communication device. This device was invented by a team from the Duke Pratt School of Engineering and is intended to help people with ALS and those who help take care of them.

What is the Condition Being Studied?

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)

Who Can Participate in the Study?

For participants with ALS

Adults ages 18+ who:

  • Are diagnosed with ALS
  • Have an adult care partner who can assist with their activities of daily living

For care partners/community support people

Adults ages 18+ who:

  • Are a family member, care provider, or personal friend of a participant with ALS
  • Are able to interact with the participant with ALS for at least 2 of the 7 days in the study period

What is Involved?

For this study, the participant with ALS will wear a small communication device at the base of the neck for at least 15 minutes twice per day. The study's care partner, the participant with ALS, and a friend of the participant with ALS will fill out study surveys at different times throughout the 7-day study period.
