Coffee and Tea May Be Good for Your Liver

February 17, 2014

Can caffeine reduce fatty liver in people who have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)? Findings from a study by an international team of Duke researchers suggest it can.

The study was led by researchers from the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School in Singapore and the Duke University School of Medicine. Their findings suggest that consuming the equivalent caffeine intake of four cups of coffee or tea a day may help prevent and protect against the progression of NAFLD.

It is estimated that 30 percent of adults in the United States have NAFLD. There are no effective treatments except diet and exercise.
