Duke Health experts offer comprehensive patient and family-centered palliative care to children prenatal to young adulthood living with complex, life-threatening, or chronic conditions. We work alongside your child's primary medical team to provide an extra layer of support. Our goal is to support you and your child by minimizing the symptoms and stress associated with serious illness. We help you and your child navigate the social, spiritual, and emotional distress your family may experience.

If your child has a serious illness that is impacting their quality of life, is experiencing symptoms that are difficult to manage, or approaching the end of life, ask a member of your care team to contact the Pediatric Quality of Life provider on call to refer you for services.

The Duke Pediatric Quality of Life team provides an extra layer of support that complements the medical care your child receives. Here's how we can help:

  • We help improve communication and coordination of care by partnering with your child’s medical teams.
  • We aid in coordinated transitions between the hospital and home.
  • We answer your questions and translate information about your child's illness and complicated medical treatments in an easy-to-understand way.
  • We support you and your child in making decisions and planning for the future.

Symptom and Pain Relief
Our doctors and nurses provide relief of symptoms including pain, shortness of breath, nausea, anxiety, decreased appetite, and difficulty sleeping.

Psychosocial and Spiritual Support
We provide psychosocial and spiritual support in a way that puts your child and family in the center and reflects your unique values and dynamics. We are here to support you, your child, and your extended family.

Inpatient and Outpatient Services

Inpatient Care
Our inpatient team members see children in the hospital and can help to navigate the transition from the hospital to home. We will partner with your child's primary and subspecialty medical teams to help support your child while they remain hospitalized.

Outpatient Care
Our outpatient team can see your child in the clinic to continue to support your child's quality of life, help to relieve symptoms, coordinate communications between your care teams, and help you make decisions that may arise about your child's care.
