A large number of patients with a wide variety of
STDs receive treatment at an outreach

Department.
Duke’s outpatient infectious disease clinic
offers consultations for ambulatory patients with acute
infectious disease problems as well as ongoing care of patients
with chronic infectious diseases requiring specialized
management and/or treatment, including HIV.
HIV Services
Duke advocates outpatient management of HIV and its
complications whenever possible. Duke provides outpatient
services to more than 1500 patients with HIV infection, and
more than 100 patients visit the clinics each week.
Almost one third of these patients are enrolled in
clinical studies involving
anti-retroviral drugs or drugs to
treat opportunistic infections and neoplasms.
Treatment rooms for the administration of medications,
fluids, and transfusions are provided.
Social work and counseling support are also
offered, including peer counseling and referrals to legal
assistance and pastoral services.
Confidential peer counseling is offered for
clients of the Duke infectious disease clinic.
The peer counselor can offer:
- Emotional, spiritual, or motivational support
- A listening ear
- Medication management
- Referrals to other services
- Help with doctor’s visits
- Education about your illness
- Motivational support
Your doctor or social worker can make an appointment for
you, or you can call directly. To contact for peer counselor,
call 919-668-2244 and ask for Mary. You may leave a
confidential message.
At Duke, social workers patients with other support
