Focused ultrasound for uterine fibroids

Duke is the only North Carolina center offering magnetic resonance (MR)-guided focused ultrasound to treat uterine fibroids. When painful uterine fibroids disrupt your life, focused ultrasound may be a non-invasive alternative to hysterectomy that leaves your uterus intact.

Relief from painful uterine fibroids

Focused ultrasound for uterine fibroids provides fast relief from the heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, and pressure often associated with uterine fibroids, the non cancerous growths that can form in your uterus.

Our gynecologic specialists have years of experience using MR-guided focused ultrasound to destroy uterine fibroids. The MR creates a 3-D map to identify the precise location of the fibroids. Our specialists also use the MR images to target the delivery of high-intensity ultrasound beams that are 10,000 times stronger than the ultrasound waves used for diagnostic imaging. The beams destroy the blood supply to the fibroids, which stops their growth. The 3-D images also ensure surrounding tissue and organs, including your bowel and bladder, remain healthy and untouched.

Focused ultrasound for uterine fibroids is non-invasive, requires no radiation or anesthesia, and has a low rate of complications. It is painless, performed in our clinic, and your recovery is swift. You return to your normal activities the next day.

If you are not a candidate for focused ultrasound, you may benefit from a different procedure.  Several uterine fibroid treatment options are available.

Preparing for your procedure

We need to receive a completed patient questionnaire from you, along with a digital copy of a recent MRI or a written report from a pelvic ultrasound. The material will be reviewed by our doctors to determine whether you may be a candidate for this procedure before we can schedule your consultation appointment.
