WHERE I PROVIDE CARE
Profile
ABOUT ME

I see a large variety of patients who suffer from a multitude of eye diseases that affect the back of the eye – specifically, the retina and vitreous. I treat some simple but mostly complex retinal diseases, most commonly macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment and other macular disease, as well as ocular trauma and uveitis. I became interested in medicine as a young child. My father is a psychiatrist and my mother a molecular biologist (both now retired), so I was surrounded by science and worked in biochemistry labs even as a young teenager. I also knew fairly early on that I wanted to become a surgeon. There is nothing more rewarding than helping others. I enjoy getting to know my patients and have a friendly relationship with them. As far as personal interests, I love to spend time with my wife and our two daughters. I am a soccer dad and a musician of sorts as I’ve played guitar and bass in several bands. I also enjoy photography and suffer through swimming, running, and other athletic “exploits.”

Clinical Focus and Research
MY RESEARCH INTERESTS

My research has focused on macular degeneration. I was the lead clinician and Co-PI on the team that was the first to identify the risk genes for age-related macular degeneration. I hope that those discoveries will ultimately lead to a cure for the disease. I’ve had a fruitful academic research career but now my non-clinical time is mostly spent in administration. I am the Vice Chair of Clinical Operations of the Department of and the Chief of Ambulatory Surgery, Ophthalmology. My goal is to improve the way care is delivered and to make that delivery of the best care easier and more efficient for both patients and caregivers.
