Wolfgang B. Liedtke, MD, PhD
Neurologist, Pain Medicine Specialist
Both as a physician and as a scientist, my focus is to understand the mechanisms critical for pain to alleviate the suffering of patients who are afflicted by therapy-refractory pain. I focus on trigeminal and other cranial nerve (glossopharyngeal) pain disorders. As a laboratory-based scientist, I maintain a research agenda in sync with my clinical focus, taking advantage of methodology from molecular biology, physiology, and biomedical engineering. In my laboratory, I intend to understand how calcium influx regulates pain. This applies to both physiological pain, which is a healthy mechanism that has given our species a survival advantage, and to pathological pain, which can torment patients. In my clinical practice and as a headache specialist, I continue to learn from my patients. I hope I can understand their suffering from a special perspective because of my specific training and research background.
