ABOUT ME

Much of what I do at Duke is to develop new approaches to helping kids. On the medical side of campus, I practice as a pediatric oncologist, and I direct the Pediatric Quality of Life/Palliative Care program. In the Divinity School, I develop courses and programs to better understand the experience of illness and suffering. The children I have cared for have taught me more than anyone about how to grow as a doctor. I am married and have two kids. Outside the hospital, my two favorite activities are writing and playing my guitar. I have published four books: The Book of Colors, The Ancient Quarrel Between Poetry and Philosophy, Pascal's Wager: What Is It to Be Human?, and Life in the Blind Spot, a book of poetry.
