Profile
ABOUT ME

I’m a pediatric endocrinologist who sees children with diabetes and hormone problems that impact their growth, development or puberty. The best thing about being a pediatric endocrinologist is that we often have the opportunity to treat our patients so that they may have normal growth and development. This is very satisfying for our patients, their families and us. One of the great things about practicing at Duke is how we work in a team. I am able to discuss challenging cases with my own colleagues or reach out to other specialists when needed. It’s a great benefit for our patients to have multiple physicians and experts contributing to their care. Outside of work, I enjoy going reading, watching movies, and spending time with my husband and three children.

Clinical Focus and Research
MY RESEARCH INTERESTS

My research focuses on the link between nutrition and immunity. Specifically, we are interested in hormones secreted from fat cells that communicate nutritional status to cells of the immune system. By understanding the way in which nutritional status is communicated to immune cells, we hope to identify interventions to augment immunity in conditions where poor nutrition influences outcome. These studies are also applicable to understanding the inflammation seen in obesity which leads to metabolic disease such as diabetes.
