I am a licensed child psychiatrist with specialty training in child maltreatment, neuro-biological predictors, and consequences of adolescent alcohol and substance abuse, pediatric brain imaging, post-traumatic stress disorder and depression, and neuro-endocrinology.

MY RESEARCH INTERESTS

I am director of the Duke Healthy Childhood Brain Development and Developmental Traumatology Program. I have published several seminal papers on the psychobiology of child abuse and maltreatment-related post-traumatic stress disorder. I am the recipient of several National Institutes of Health, private foundation, and national awards for my research including: the 1998 A.E. Bennett Neuropsychiatric Research Foundation Award for Original Investigation in Clinical Science from the Society of Biological Psychiatry for the paper “Developmental Traumatology: Biological Stress Systems and Brain Development in Maltreated Children with PTSD”; and the 1999 Chaim Danieli Young Professional Award from the International Society of Traumatic Stress Studies for Outstanding and Fundamental Contribution to the Field of Traumatic Stress Studies.
