Profile
ABOUT ME

I am a rehabilitation engineer particularly interested in using technology to better the lives of people with disabilities. I have worked with assistive technologies including augmentative communication, computer access, seating and wheelchair mobility, environmental control, and home and worksite modification since 1989. After completing an engineering degree at the University of Maryland, I worked for 10 years at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center as part of a multidisciplinary assistive technology team. At Duke, I coordinate the Assistive Technology Clinic, which provides augmentative and alternative communication technology and computer access evaluation, training and support to adults and children with a variety of disabilities and conditions. I am also part of the Duke ALS Clinic team. I have taught senior design in the Duke Department of Biomedical Engineering, where students have developed more than 60 custom assistive devices for people with disability.

MY RESEARCH INTERESTS

My research interest is in using technology to improve the health, welfare and independence of people with disabling conditions. I have worked on research projects that have included people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and conditions relating to aging. Technologies I have researched include brain-computer interfaces, automatic speech recognition of dysarthric speech, wheeled mobility devices, and tele-rehabilitation. I have given presentations in the United States and internationally on computer access, environmental control, augmentative and alternative communication, seating, positioning, mobility, and the integration of control technologies.
