WHERE I PROVIDE CARE
Profile
ABOUT ME

I grew up on a farm in rural east Tennessee, in the Appalachian Hills. My grandfather was a small town pediatrician for 50+ years and had an indelible influence on my career path and decisions. I attended Wake Forest University for college, then to the University of Tennessee for Medical School in Memphis, where I met my wife. I have always had a strong interest in health disparities, rural health, and global health. I was fortunate enough to train in a combined internal medicine-global health residency at Duke, which gave me the opportunity to live and work abroad at Duke’s partnership site in Tanzania, where over the course of a year I saw many patients with different types of kidney disease and conducted epidemiological research to understand why they had such high burdens of kidney disease. We had the most amazing time in Tanzania meeting people, learning the language and culture, and even climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro. After returning from that experience, I was certain of my decision to pursue training in Nephrology, and I completed fellowship training at Duke. Now, I diagnosis and treat an array of kidney disease. My particular focus is on the treatment of kidney disease before it becomes kidney failure requiring dialysis.

Clinical Focus and Research
MY RESEARCH INTERESTS

My research interests are in chronic kidney disease, with a focus on preventing kidney failure. In particular, I am interested in using translational methods, such as genetic, metabolomic, and population-based epidemiological studies, to identify causes for and eventually eliminate health disparities in kidney disease. I work to understand the patterns and causes of chronic kidney disease in sub-Saharan Africa, where more than 120 million people now are estimated to live with kidney disease, yet therapies are not readily available. In North Carolina, I am particularly focused on rural health disparities, where much of the kidney disease occurs yet access to healthcare remains limited. I specifically work in Robeson County, NC to study causes and drivers of the high burdens of kidney disease, with a focus on the Lumbee Indians.
