About Me

I was born in Los Angeles, California, and after school, I spent 22 years training and practicing radiology at Stanford University, where I founded and led the 3D Imaging Laboratory and the section of Cardiovascular Imaging. I also served as the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs of the School of Medicine until coming to Duke Health in 2010 to chair the Department of Radiology. I am passionate about radiology and the central role of imaging in diagnosing and managing diseases, particularly those involving the heart, lungs, and blood vessels. The best part of my day is when I get to sit down with a clinical colleague or a patient to explain the details and nuances of their imaging studies and see the impact that brings to their care.

My Research Interests

I study imaging as tools to enhance the diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing assessment of cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases. I develop novel, analytical approaches to interpretation that leverage 3D visualization and artificial intelligence. I also study access to imaging technology that various patients have and how that might impact their health.
