Duke Health contracts with most major health insurance carriers and transplant networks, including the ones listed below. Before scheduling your appointment, we strongly recommend you contact your insurance company to verify that the Duke Health location or provider you plan to visit is included in your network. Your insurance company will also be able to inform you of any co-payments, co–insurances, or deductibles that will be your responsibility. If you proceed in scheduling an appointment and your health insurance benefits do not participate with Duke, your out of pocket liability may be higher. We will contact you regarding your coverage and patient liability. If you are uninsured, learn more about our financial assistance policy.

Below are the plans currently accepted in 2018. There are some changes to the plans accepted beginning January 1, 2019. More information will become available on PlanForDuke.com.

WHERE I PROVIDE CARE
Profile
ABOUT ME

I started out in geriatrics and over time moved into palliative care. It’s not easy to explain what inpatient palliative care is because people automatically think it’s hospice. But hospice and palliative care are two distinct entities. Palliative care is much more upstream. It’s primarily pain and symptom management, and it’s primarily communication. By that I mean we are asked to participate in family meetings where goals of care are delineated, and we ask the patient what they want, and we try to make that happen. My style is unique – I’ve been told that 1,000 times. When I approach a patient or family, I refuse to follow any scripts or utter any previously researched phrases. My approach is, it’s your moment, not mine. I walk into the room, read the room, and say “Hi, I’m Tony Galanos. I’ve been at Duke 25 years and I’m here to help you navigate the system.”

Clinical Focus and Research
MY RESEARCH INTERESTS

My original research was on the functional status of community dwelling elderly. With time, I focused my research on the hospital setting, specifically with regard to end of life care. My hope is to make the hospital a more user friendly setting for folks with life-limiting illness.
