About Me

I am originally from a small town in Colorado where I became interested in medicine after working as a firefighter. I’ve been lucky to have had many experiences before becoming a doctor, including working as a cook, a high school sex-ed teacher, and a counselor for people with addiction, all of which prepared me in different ways to take care of my patients. I am passionate about making sure all voices are heard, especially those from people and communities who experience oppression and barriers to health. As a family medicine resident, I am fortunate to have the opportunity to care for patients at Duke Health.

Clinical Focus and Research

My Research Interests

My research focuses on understanding how health systems can best support people, communities, and populations to be healthy. This includes looking around the world to study different ways to provide and finance health care and understand the intersection of medical care with economic policy, food, built environment, and systems of oppression as they influence health. In the past, my work has studied systems of HIV care and socioeconomic determinants of health in Kampala as well as public sector primary care delivery amid state-sanctioned conflict in Rio de Janeiro. I am a strong believer in the responsibility of the government to directly provide health care as a human right and the right of communities to have a say in public policy that influences their health. My research seeks to understand how health is an investment and how these concepts can be translated into practice.
