COVID Testing in Schools - An Interview Study - Clinical Trial
What is the Purpose of this Study?
We are doing this study to learn about the social, ethical, and behavioral outcomes of COVID-19 prevention practices in schools, and to find out whether these practices have any differential impact toward students of color. We want to learn from the perspectives of Black and Latino/a/x students and caregivers of Black and Latino/a/x students in Durham County Public and Charter Schools.
Estamos realizando este estudio para aprender sobre los resultados sociales, éticos y de comportamiento de las prácticas de prevención de COVID-19 en las escuelas, y para averiguar si es que estas prácticas tienen cualquier impacto diferencial hacia los estudiantes de color. Who Can Participate in the Study?
Parents/caregivers with at least one child who:
- Is enrolled in a traditional public school or charter school in Durham, NC
- Identifies as Black, African American, Hispanic, or Latino/a/x
Students who:
- Attend in-person middle or high school in Durham, NC
- Self-identify as Black, African American, Hispanic, or Latino/a/x

What is Involved?
If you are a parent/caregiver and you choose to join this study, you will take part in a one-time, hour-long interview. This interview can be on the computer (using Zoom or Google Classroom) or on the telephone. The topics we will discuss with you include:
- The benefits of the COVID-19 prevention strategies used at your child's school
- Any concerns you might have about the prevention strategies
- What you think are the outcomes of the prevention strategies
- Any negative impact of the prevention strategies due to your child's race and/or ethnicity
If you are a student and you choose to join this study, we will discuss some different topics with you. These topics include:
- How you feel about wearing masks
- COVID-19 testing in schools
- COVID-19 vaccines
We will ask parents and students to share some personal information with us like age, educational background, and whether or not you have gotten a COVID-19 vaccine.
You can choose not to answer any question we ask during the interview. You will be compensated for your time.
Los padres o guardianes que decidan formar parte de este estudio, participarán en una entrevista única de una hora de duración. La entrevista será realizada por computador (usando Zoom o Google Classroom) o por teléfono.
Los temas de conversación incluirán:
- Los beneficios de las estrategias de prevención de COVID-19 usadas en la escuela de su niño(a)
- Cualquiera preocupación que puedan tener sobre las estrategias de prevención
- Cuales creen que son los resultados de las estrategias de prevención
- Cualquier impacto negativo de las estrategias de prevención debido a la raza y/o etnicidad de su niño(a)
Los estudiantes que decidan formar parte de este estudio, participarán en conversaciones con temas diferentes. Estos temas incluirán:
- Cómo se sienten usando mascarillas
- Pruebas de COVID-19 en las escuelas
- Vacunas de COVID-19
Los participantes pueden escoger no responder cualquiera pregunta. A todos los participantes se les compensará por su tiempo.
