Diet in African Americans with Chronic Kidney Disease (DASH-CKD) - Clinical Trial
What is the Purpose of this Study?
We want to find out how diet changes can help people with high blood pressure and kidney disease.
High Blood Pressure and Kidney Disease in African American Men and Women
Who Can Participate in the Study?
Black men and women who:
- Are 21 years of age or older
- Have chronic kidney disease defined as having an estimated glomerular filtration rate of 20-44 ml/min/1.73m2
- Have high blood pressure

What is Involved?
If you choose to join this study, you will be randomly assigned (like a coin flip) to 1 of 2 groups.
If you're assigned to Group A, you will:
- Meet with a dietitian one time for 30 minutes
- Get advice about diet changes you can make to lower your blood pressure
If you're assigned to Group B, you will:
- Meet with a dietitian once per week as part of a group with other study participants
- Get advice about diet changes you can make to lower your blood pressure
- Attend 12 of these weekly meetings
Regardless of your group, you will also:
- Come to our clinic 5 times for check-up visits
- Have blood draws
- Have your blood pressure measured
- Give urine and stool samples
- Fill out surveys
- Keep a record of what you eat
The weekly meetings for Group B will be in-person and over video conference. Each meeting will last about 1 hour.
We will pay you for your time on the study.
