About Tinnitus

Tinnitus is the perception of sound heard in your ears or inside your head that is not from an outside source. The sounds are often described as ringing, chirping, buzzing, hissing, whistling, or humming.

Our Locations

Duke Health offers locations throughout the Triangle. Find one near you.

Tests for Tinnitus

Our audiologists conduct a thorough evaluation of your tinnitus and recommend the most appropriate treatment for your condition.

What to Expect During Your Evaluation Appointment
If you have not undergone a comprehensive hearing test within the last six months, we will perform an updated exam, which includes measuring your ultra-high frequency hearing thresholds.

The 90-minute appointment also includes a questionnaire, measuring your tinnitus pitch and volume, and counseling to discuss how to manage your condition.

Tinnitus Treatment

While there is currently no cure for tinnitus, there are several treatment approaches that provide relief.

Tinnitus Education and Counseling

We discuss the causes and effects of tinnitus as well as strategies for minimizing its disturbance.

Sound Therapy

Masking techniques (i.e., attempting to cover your tinnitus with other sounds) will help us determine whether sound therapy can reduce your tinnitus awareness and disturbance. If hearing loss is also present, we may recommend trying hearing aids that include a tinnitus feature. This improves hearing and will often reduce the perception of tinnitus while wearing the hearing aids.

Alternative Therapies

We may recommend that you see a specialist, pursue psychological management like cognitive behavioral therapy, or take advantage of services offered by Duke Integrative Medicine to help you manage your tinnitus.
