Center of Excellence programs are evaluated and recognized by independent organizations outside of our surgical practice. Only programs meeting each organization’s strict criteria are honored. Criteria include such things as outcomes, experience, and resources.

The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery

ASMBS Center of Excellence designation recognizes surgical programs with a demonstrated track record of favorable outcomes in bariatric surgery. Surgeons with the Duke Center for Metabolic and Weight Loss Surgery exceed several bench marks required by the ASMBS to attain Center of Excellence status.

In addition, Centers of Excellence must have a comprehensive program including surgeons, nurses, medical consultants, nutritionists, and psychologists. Duke’s weight loss surgery program performs over 600 bariatric operations each year with a low incidence of morbidity and mortality.

Blue Cross Blue Shield

The Duke Center for Metabolic and Weight Loss Surgery is a Blue Cross Blue Shield Blue Distinction Center for Bariatric Surgery. We were the first program in the region to receive this accreditation.

According to Blue Cross Blue Shield, Blue Distinction Centers provide quality care, resulting in better overall outcomes for bariatric patients. Our program meets stringent clinical criteria, while at the same time providing surgical options tailored to each patient. Post-operative care from staff trained in the needs of bariatric surgery patients, outpatient follow-up care, and patient education are provided to help you succeed in your goal of permanent weight loss.

CIGNA

The Duke Center for Metabolic and Weight Loss Surgery is designated as a Center of Excellence with CIGNA health insurance. Like other Center of Excellence programs, CIGNA has detailed requirements in order for a program to receive this distinction, including a comprehensive program and positive patient outcomes.
