We use ultrasound at the Duke Vein Clinic as a valuable tool to evaluate the larger, longer, and superficial veins that are just under the skin and can not be seen by looking at your legs.

Even though most patients experience pain, swelling, or have problematic veins they can see, the root of the problem is frequently the larger, longer veins that they can’t see.

Duplex ultrasound performs two functions. It is a conventional ultrasound that uses sound waves to evaluate the structure, size/diameter, and location (mapping) of your veins.

It can also evaluate how the blood flows through your veins. By evaluating flow, we can tell if you have the faulty valves of varicose veins that allow backward, unhealthy blood flow causing problems for other veins “downstream.”

Advantages of Duplex Ultrasound

  • Performed minutes prior to your doctor’s visit at the Duke Vein Clinic in Durham, so your doctor has important information about your veins at the time of your visit
  • Non-invasive procedure
  • Determines exact vein size
  • Maps veins to help your physician treat them effectively
  • Determines if there is backward flow in veins from faulty valves, as seen with varicose veins
  • Determines if blood clots are present in the veins
  • Helps your doctor determine the best treatment for your veins
  • Assists in the performance of many of the procedures used to treat your veins
