We use ultrasound at the Duke Vein Clinic as a valuable tool to evaluate the larger, longer, and superficial veins that are just under the skin and can not be seen by looking at your legs.
Even though most patients experience pain, swelling, or have problematic veins they can see, the root of the problem is frequently the larger, longer veins that they can’t see.
Duplex ultrasound performs two functions. It is a conventional ultrasound that uses sound waves to evaluate the structure, size/diameter, and location (mapping) of your veins.
It can also evaluate how the blood flows through your veins. By evaluating flow, we can tell if you have the faulty valves of varicose veins that allow backward, unhealthy blood flow causing problems for other veins “downstream.”
