Compression stockings improve the signs and symptoms of various conditions of venous disease by providing graduated compression therapy to help control leg swelling and discomfort.
These stockings are used to treat many conditions from varicose veins to venous stasis ulcers and are always used for a short duration after treatment of the larger veins.
They are called “graduated” because they are specially designed to apply more pressure in the ankle area and gradually decrease the pressure applied to the thigh area.
The stockings are designed for both female and male use, and they are made from a combination of elastic, nylon, or lycra and are available latex-free. They are available for single leg compression in both knee-high and thigh-high lengths and for both legs in a full panty hose style.
The compression or pressure applied to the legs is measured in mmHg and are available in several compression pressures (8 - 40 mmHg). Since most elastic stockings are recommended to be worn throughout each day, they are also available in many basic colors to blend with patient’s skin tones.
The amount of pressure required by a compression stocking depends on the patient, the severity and type of venous disease being treated; therefore they are filled by prescription at most medical supply stores.
After your physician evaluates and diagnoses your condition, she or he will determine which pressure stocking would best treat your condition. Since all legs are different in length and circumferences, before a stocking is dispensed the medical supply personnel will measure the intended leg to ensure maximum therapeutic effects from the stockings.
Compression stockings are available for purchase at the Duke Vein Clinic inside the Duke Aesthetics Center.
They are also available at most medical supply stores. Usually, the patient is responsible for the costs of compressions stockings. Under special circumstances, such as DVT or lymphedema, some insurances companies may offer compressions stockings as a covered benefit.
