For patients with a blockage of arteries that supply blood to the limbs, Duke’s team of vascular surgeons and vascular interventional radiologists provide the most advanced treatment, including percutaneous (catheter-based) treatment for most patients.

Open surgery is also offered, as well as experimental therapies for patients without other options.

Duke offers the most advanced treatment for both non-critical limb ischemia (also known as peripheral vascular disease or peripheral arterial disease) as well as critical limb ischemia (a more severe form of the disease in which the patient is at risk of losing a limb).

Treatments include:

  • Advanced endovascular procedures such as atherectomy of medium and small vessels
  • Conventional therapies such as angioplasty, stenting, and lower extremity bypass

For some critical limb ischemia patients who aren’t good candidates for bypass or traditional revascularization, experimental therapies involving gene therapy and angiogenesis are offered.
