Lung Transplant

Share

The number of patients seeking treatment from the Duke Lung Transplant Program has risen steadily as our reputation for excellence grows. The following graphs illustrate our exceptional patient outcomes, wait times, and volumes.

Waiting Times

Duke offers the shortest wait of all U.S. lung transplant centers -- 12 days, on average, in 2011. The following graph shows the median wait time for patients to receive a lung transplant after they have listed as a transplant recipient.

Survival Rates

Despite a highly complex caseload, Duke is the national's only lung transplant program with better-than-expected survival rates.

  • Duke patients have half the risk of dying in the first year post-transplant (.44 percent observed/expected at 30 days and .51 percent observed/expected at one year)
  • 97.8 percent survival rate at one month (95.1 percent expected)
  • 89.3 percent survival rate at one year (80.4 percent expected)

Duke also offers the highest transplant rate of any U.S. organ-transplant program (14.42 percent versus 2.98 percent expected) -- achieved through our aggressive evaluation of potential lung donors -- greatly reducing the risk of patients dying while awaiting transplant.
