Pre and Post-Operative Instructions

Before your first appointment:

What to Bring:

  • List of medications
  • Completed new patient paperwork
  • Disc of recent MRI/CT scan
  • Any questions you may have

What can I expect from the consultation?

  • After a physical examination and review of your MRI or CT, your spine provider will discuss with you possible treatment options.  At times, your provider may want to order further diagnostic testing to confirm or rule out a diagnosis. 

Before your surgery:

  • Check with your physician’s office regarding your medication regimen and which medicines you will be allowed to take the before your surgery.
  • Arrange for a family member or friend to bring you to the hospital and to drive you home.
  • Do not eat or drink after midnight the night prior to surgery.
  • You will be informed of your check-in time via telephone the business day before surgery. 

After your surgery:

  • Gradually start increasing your activity, unless instructed to do otherwise.  Start slowly and pace yourself.
  • Speak with your physician regarding when it is safe to resume driving.
  • Take medication as directed.
  • Please call your physician’s office when you need refills of any pain medication.

Wound Care:

  • Contact your physician’s office for information regarding suture removal.
  • Inspect your wound for signs and symptoms of infection – redness, excessive swelling, and   drainage.
  • Keep incision clean and dry.
  • Please call your physician’s office if you have any questions or concerns about your incision.
