Kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty are minimally invasive procedures often recommended as treatment to help decrease the pain caused by compression fractures of the spinal column.
During kyphoplasty or vetebroplasty, a type of bone cement is placed into the body of the vertebra that stabilizes the fracture.
Kyphoplasties and vertebroplasties are most commonly used to treat patients with compression fractures. These fractures may be due to osteoporosis, trauma, or tumors of the spinal column.
Patients will be able to move around shortly after the procedure. Some patients are even able to go home the same day.
Since patients are able to return home the day of or the day after surgery, routine activities will be able to resume shortly after surgery. Make sure to talk with your physician regarding any specific limitations.
