History of Skull Base Surgery

Share

Skull base surgery is an effective treatment for targeting many different types of skull base tumors. At Duke, our surgical specialists use surgery to diagnose and remove skull base tumors.

We treat a variety of skull base tumors, including:

  • Acoustic neuromas
  • Chordomas and chondrosarcomas
  • Epidermoid cysts
  • Glomus tumors
  • Meningiomas
  • Neurovascular compression disorders
  • Pituitary tumors

Our surgeons are experts at determining which patients will benefit from skull base surgery. They carefully assess each patient's situation, considering the age and health of the patient, the size and location of the tumor, and the patient's history when determining if surgery is the best treatment approach.

The surgeon may use computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or ultrasound to see and pinpoint the tumor and remove as much of the tissue as possible without affecting normal function.

Our team of specialists also provide comprehensive care after surgery to address problems with hearing and balance.
